Thin and polished sections are prepared to determine the mineralogical properties of ore and coal samples used in research projects, as well as the products obtained from plant operations and experiments. Measurements are taken using a sedimentation balance and an Andreasen pipette—which are used specifically to determine the particle size distributions of fine-grained materials—and a BET instrument, which is used to determine surface areas; in addition, a variety of related equipment is available.
